Trump Investment Strategy: David Rosenberg Says There’s Still Opportunity Despite Political Turmoil
The Trump investment strategy remains relevant for investors, even as political interference rattles confidence in key U.S. institutions. According to economist David Rosenberg, founder and president of Rosenberg Research & Associates Inc. in Toronto, investors should pay attention — not panic — in response to recent moves by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The president’s firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, combined with his long-standing criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, has sparked concern over the politicization of economic data and institutions. But Rosenberg insists this doesn’t mean it’s time to retreat from U.S. assets.
“You need to assess how the president’s decisions impact markets and reposition accordingly,” Rosenberg said.
“You can either throw up your hands, or ask — how do I invest around this Trump investment strategy?”
He suggests focusing on industries benefiting from deregulation and trade protectionism, such as financials, which have already shown strength under Trump’s policies.
Rosenberg also expects rate cuts to play a role in shaping future returns:
“The yield curve will likely steepen due to falling short-term rates. What happens to long-term rates depends on how inflation behaves.”
The Fallout from the BLS Shake-Up
Rosenberg called Trump’s dismissal of McEntarfer “deeply concerning,” noting it’s highly unusual for a BLS commissioner to be removed — especially under accusations of data manipulation. He criticized the appointment of E.J. Antoni, a Heritage Foundation economist with no statistical experience, as further undermining institutional trust.
“This creates a credibility crisis for future labor market reports,” Rosenberg warned.
“Investors may need to rely more on private data from ADP, Intuit, Indeed, and various regional Fed surveys.”
Strategic Positioning in a Trump-Led Economy
Despite these issues, Rosenberg emphasizes that opportunities remain — if investors look in the right places.
“There’s still a playbook to follow,” he said. “The Trump investment strategy is real — and it’s about understanding where deregulation, trade policy, and rate shifts converge to create advantage.”
