Statistics Canada reported that Canada’s population grew at its slowest pace for a second quarter on record, excluding 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted borders.
As of July 1, the country’s population was estimated at 41,651,653, reflecting an increase of 47,098 people, or just 0.1%, compared with April 1.
This was the weakest growth rate for the April-to-June period since Q2 of 2020, when pandemic restrictions nearly brought growth to a halt.
The modest gain in population this year was largely driven by international migration, which added 33,694 people during the quarter.
Meanwhile, natural increase — births minus deaths — contributed 13,404 people.
On an annual basis, from July 1, 2024 to July 1, 2025, the Canadian population expanded by 389,324, equivalent to a growth rate of 0.9%.
